How long have you been in business?

What is your primary product or service?
Self-defense, fitness, situational awareness and reflex training for all ages. Special training for improving focus, concentration and confidence in teens and children aged 3 and up.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Master Instructor Porter Hughes spent 8 years in US Naval Intelligence, special ops; then worked for 11 years in Corporate and Bank security management and training, as well as spending a year as an undercover investigator. He and his family (wife and two adult sons) spent 10 years training in American-style Taekwondo, but became interested in something more useful for self-defense. Jung Kwon Academy was formed after a 3 1/2 year project involving 11 'old-time' Black Belts from 5 different states, which resulted in JKMAA being founded as the sole authentic, traditional Chung Do Kwan school in the state of North Carolina. Master Hughes was inducted into the USKF Black Belt HOF (Hall Of Fame) in 2016.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Besides being the least commercialized school in the region (low prices, no add-on fees, no hidden costs, no expensive 'clubs' to join, discounted uniforms and gear, and easy monthly arrangements), with small classes and multiple adult instructors in every class; we also are the only martial arts program in the region to guarantee in writing: All instructors are Adults, and Internationally Certified 2nd Degree Black Belt rank, or higher; All test panel judges are Adult, 2nd Degree or higher.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We run three programs in Asheville, and are planning on adding programs in the Arden area.

Afterschool Program (grade 6 -10) @ Franklin School of Innovation, next to WNC Barbell Gym (open to FSI alumni; we are working on two additional Afterschool programs at this time) Adult/Family Program (age 8 and up) @ Nichols Lodge, West Asheville, 22 Brevard Rd. Across from Salvation Army, and on the corner of Wells Ave.

Which areas do you service?
Our student base is predominantly from Buncombe, Haywood and Henderson Counties, but we have a number of students who come from Marion, Rutherfordton, Forest City and Morganton. Additionally, there are a number of long-distance students who practice with us when they are in the area for business or vacations. They come from Denver, CO; Hagerstown, MD; Atlanta, GA; Columbia, SC; and Portland, OR.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Family owned and operated. Master Hughes personally teaches nearly 90% of all classes.
What are your hours of operation?
Mondays (as announced) Tuesday (1:00pm - 8:30pm) Wednesday (6:00pm - 8:30pm) Thursday (1:00pm - 8:30pm) Saturday (12noon - 2:00pm)
